About this Talk
Your dream editor steps into the elevator with you! Do you:
A) Smile silently because your brain freezes?
B) Babble out a barrage of plot points in random order?
C) Smoothly deliver a killer pitch that prompts the editor to ask for more?
If you want to be able to say option C, this session will help you craft a killer elevator pitch. And a killer pitch is not just handy for random encounters with people in publishing, it can also: become the core of your query, catch an agent’s attention during social media pitch parties, and convince readers to buy your book once it’s published. Crafting a pitch is also a great exercise to do before you start writing your story, since it helps you focus on the crucial elements and make sure there’s actually a full story there.
Condensing a complex story into a sentence or two is difficult, but a pitch is more of a marketing hook than a summary. Tell them just enough in an intriguing way to get them to ask for more. In this session, we’ll discuss why it’s important to have a concise pitch, break down the core elements of an effective pitch that will capture people’s attention, and provide prompts for practicing your pitching skills.
