Sylvia Thomson

Author, Artist and Writing Coach

About this speaker

Sylvia lives on a tiny island just off the West Coast of Canada. She has been writing and illustrating books for 25 years. Her creative career began as a freelance artist for a small indie publishing company where she designed covers and interior pictures for 15 adult and children’s books. This is where the spark for writing her own book began.

Sylvia worked as a Children’s Library Assistant, telling stories to kids and teaching writing workshops for small groups of kids. She then worked as a Children’s Director of Programs, writing curriculum and skits for children and youth, after which she became a Literacy Specialist, working with children with learning disabilities. Her passion for reading and writing continued to grow.

After receiving a Public Relations and Marketing diploma, Sylvia decided it was time to publish her writing. In 2019, her first novel, Reviving Joy was published. It is a historical fiction novel based on true events. In 2022, Ernie the Blue Beagle was published. This is the first in a series of comedic children’s books based on a real blue beagle.

Sylvia is currently working on a biographical historical fiction novel for young adults, based on her mother’s experiences during WW2 in occupied Netherlands. She is also ghostwriting, grant writing and coaching with other writers.
